music for the soul: track 01

the light – jordan rakei

Live today, if only for one moment

The light of your life is everywhere

Live today, if only for one moment

The light of your life is everywhere, where

Where, where

This is the love we thought we never had

Just know everything is over when it's meant

And I hope you see for what it is instead

fomo – fear of missing out.

Ever felt that before? I’ve heard that being inactive on social media can result in this fear. But do you ever think about what we miss out on when spend time on our phones?

When you scroll down on your Instagram or Facebook feed, what do you see? For me, it’s happy worldwide travels, engagement rings and baby bumps. None of this is happening in my life right now and has very little chance of happening in the near future. Must be sad, right? Nahhh, not for me.

Over the years, I’ve come to know that happiness and joy are not the same thing. Happiness is a feeling we experience, it is circumstantial. Therefore, it can easily disappear with a blink of an eye because of course, life is not always filled with laughter, achievements and fulfilled dreams. However, that does not necessarily mean we’ll be spending those times being miserable. Instead, we can choose joy. Each and every one of us has been given lives with our own talents, experiences and opportunities. But sometimes, we just don’t realise it when we’re waiting for that perfect guy/girl/job/holiday to come. Though some of us may be going through the lowest points of our lives, I can assure you that there can still be joy – because joy is independent of circumstance.

“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.”

- Henri Nouwen

Maybe it isn’t time for us to go on that Europe tour, to buy our dream house or start our own family and for some, the time may never come. But there is one thing that is there for all of us, at all times. It is up to us, if we are willing to recognise and accept it. This is something that alone, can satisfy all the empty voids created by suffering, loss and hurt which could never completely be filled with anything else. This is something that has always been and will always be. This is the love we thought we never had - His, is the love we will always have. This love can be found in the people around us, in the beauty that surrounds us. This is the love of our Father – there is no need to fear missing out on this.

“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
