back to the roots.

It has recently dawned on me that we spend most of our lives figuring out our identities. We are chasing so many things, trying to fill gaps and find things that satisfy us and make us happy - at least temporarily anyway. But when we take all the layers away we find that everything we do, everything we long for all connects back to our identities.

The clothes we wear, what we choose to buy, how our careers and others define us - why do they matter to us? Deep down, it's our longing to be validated, to belong, to be somebody rather than a nobody. All our insecurities, our baggage. All come back to our very cores. Underneath it all we simply want to be seen, known and loved.

If we don't know who we are and the very essence of our beings, then we are more vulnerable to believe and be dictated by the lies about our identities. We tend to believe that wearing the latest and most expensive brands will make us feel recognised. That acting and speaking in a certain way will make people like us. That having the best career title is what will truly make us happy. We can end up hiding behind many things and not truly discover who we are and the purpose we've been created for.

When we live life like this we are missing the point. If we choose to believe in those lies and not in how beautifully and wonderfully we have been created then we are focussed too much on this temporary life here on earth. We are too busy being discontent and looking for more when we probably already have what we need. We get what we think we want but it doesn't suffice. We find that it's not enough and then we're looking for the next best thing. We keep wanting and striving for more.

We can’t truly find ourselves in the temporary highs. We can’t define ourselves by our achievements and failures, nor the clothes we wear and the things we buy. To find out who we truly are, we need to look to the One who created us. The very reason of our existence. It's simple, when we look to satisfy our needs with earthly things and worldly manners it all seems meaningless. And it can even sometimes make us feel purposeless and worthless.

But when we know that our own Creator made us by hand, that He sees us, thinks of us in every moment of every day. That He loves us no matter what we do. That we are unique and precious treasures. It changes everything. It gives us purpose and reason. He created us with a unique purpose. And you are the only person that can fulfil the purpose you have been created for. Just like how I am the only one that is living this life - no one else can do it for me. If we look outside of ourselves and love ourselves more, knowing where and who we came from, if we stop believing the lies the world tells us - we'd find that there's so much more. There's so much more to be thankful for. There's so much more to work towards and live for. There's so much more we can do and be. Embracing and loving ourselves and our true identities can change everything.
